We all look forward to welcoming the warmer temperatures which come with spring – but the season also means the return of hay fever, the extremely common allergy to pollen which affects up to one in five of us during our lifetime.

Many of us are familiar with the unpleasant symptoms of hay fever, which include a runny or bunged-up nose, sneezing and itchy or watery eyes.

While it is very difficult to avoid pollen over the next coming months, there are ways to reduce the severity of your allergy.

By planning ahead and starting to take medication over the next few weeks, you can reduce your allergic reaction to pollen considerably.

Taking antihistamine tablets is a very common way of reducing the symptoms of hay fever – and taking them before your symptoms show can be an effective way of building up resistance.

There are a variety of additional treatments available to help reduce your symptoms.

Antihistamine nasal sprays, as well as anti-allergy eye drops and nasal steroid sprays from the chemist are advisable, especially before we encounter high pollen count days, or when going outside in the summer is unavoidable.

If you’re concerned you do not have the correct product to help control your hay fever symptoms, it is worth discussing other treatment options with one of our doctors.
